About this property

Welcome to Font´s Hostal

Font´s Hostal is a peaceful inn located in Areponapuchi, a quiet area close to the famous Copper Canyon in Chihuahua, Mexico. The setting suits visitors focused on sightseeing, hiking, and getting away from busier tourist spots. Guests have noted its serene atmosphere, with natural sounds like birdsong and wildlife adding to the tranquil experience. While somewhat removed from the main road, the location provides a calm base for outdoor activities and exploration.

The property offers simple, clean accommodations with shared bathroom facilities and a well-equipped communal kitchen suitable for self-catering. Although Wi-Fi is currently unavailable and mobile reception can be weak, this makes it an ideal spot for travelers looking to disconnect. Facilities include free parking and pet-friendly policies, with smoke-free environments enhancing comfort. Some guests have appreciated the attentive service provided by the owner and staff, who offer useful local insights and assistance with transportation.

Nearby activities include hiking, biking, and horseback riding through the surrounding canyons, with highlights like Copper Canyon Adventure Park within reach. A grocery store is available within walking distance for those preparing their own meals. For transport convenience, the Posada Barrancas train station lies about 1.3 kilometers away, while Ciudad Obregón International Airport is accessible by car in over nine hours.

Reviews generally praise the friendly hospitality and home-like atmosphere but mention limitations such as the lack of Wi-Fi and the property's distance from the village centre. The accommodation best fits independent travelers and backpackers who prioritize outdoor adventure and tranquility over full-service hotel amenities.

The owner, Carlos Font, is as good a host as you can ask for. He went above and beyond to give me a great experience.

My wife and I were the only guests at the hostel during the four nights we stayed there, so our experience was more akin to an Airbnb rather than a hostel. While Carlos wasn't around, he entrusted the hostel in the good hands of a nice young woman, Alejandra, who picked us up from the Divisadero train station, and was on hand to made sure we were doing ok at the hostel. She also provided a transfer service (200 MXN) if we needed a ride to any nearby destination (e.g. the Adventure Park) from the hostel and back. Despite my poor Spanish, Alejandra was also patient in communicating with me. During our third day of our stay, the main water tank at the hostel ran out of water, but Alejandra got her father to come down after work to help pump the water from the storage tank to the main water tank. Her dad also stayed around the hostel till late to made sure that the water supply was all ok before he went back home, despite us telling him that the water supply was back to normal. The location of the hostel is a little far back from the main road running through Areponapuchi (the Google Maps location is accurate), but that makes the entire place all the more "tranquilo". I can still remember the sound of birds chirping in the trees beside the hostel's porch, and also catching sight of a wild rabbit more than once. There is a grocery shop (Abbarotes Bertha) about 500m from the hostel, that we relied on to prepare our meals using the shared kitchen facilities at the hostel. The hostel is also about 1.3km from the Posada Barrancas train station, where there is a nice trail to Hotel Mirador, from which we could hike a couple of trails around it with some nice scenic viewing points (you can refer to the routes on the Maps.me or AllTrails app). Just be aware that there is no WiFi at the hostel and mobile reception there and in Areponapuchi/Divisadero can be quite weak. There will be many pockets of time that you won't get data connection, and even when you do, you may only be able to send WhatsApp messages and access non-media-intensive webpages at best. (For reference, my wife and I used OXXO CEL.)

The hostel is clean and nicely designed. There is a kitchen as well as common areas inside and outside so that you can easily meet people. I had one great night with some other Mexicans and another nice evening with the owner Carlos. He was super helpful with pick ups and drop offs at the train station, gave me a lot of information for hikes as well as the area in general and allowed me to use his washing mashine. Although the hostel is a little walk from the village, it is not too far away from the hiking trails and makes a great base for any backpacker in this area (admittingly, to my knowledge it is also the only hostel). Furthermore, there was very limited reception using Telcel and as of October 2024 no WiFi as it is really difficult to have internet in this area. Carlos was planning to get Satellite wifi soon though. Extra tip: Carlos is very fair and doesn't charge you more if you book directly with him. So calling in and making a reservation saves you the money for the reservation, necessary on many websites.

Fantástico! We spent 3 nights at Hostel Font’s. Carlos was the ultimate host providing a warm welcome, clean, comfortable accommodations, and all the amenities you need. A restaurant and small store are a short walk away. Don’t miss the ‘Sunrise Hike’! Thank you Carlos for everything and for leading us on a hiking tour that was pure magic and the highlight of our visit to Copper Canyon.

An incredible stay here in Areponapuchi if you’re a budget traveller or just want to be in a quiet and tranquil area to relax, hike and explore the surrounding areas. Carlos is an absolute legend with a heart of gold. - The house is Carlos’ home and he takes great pride in the presentation and upkeep of it (and is still working and making improvements). - A kitchen with everything needed for self-catering, it is super well equipped - microwave, George Foreman, oven, stovetop, toaster oven, large fridge, pots/pans/cutlery etc. - If you want to take a break from the countless hiking/walking options nearby you can take advantage of the living area with a fire, TV, wide selection of DVD’s or do a jigsaw puzzle. - The 8-bed dorm is basic and cosy (300 pesos a night) with lockers, space heaters and enough blankets to get through the cold nights. - Clean bathroom, always hot water available and good pressure. - There’s no wifi here and you’ll have limited reception at the house (for reference I have an OXXO SIM card), it’s a perfect place to disconnect. Make sure you have downloaded an offline map for the area! - You are within 10 minutes walking distance down the road to a grocery store with all the basic essentials, snacks a few vegetables to choose from, also a freezer filled with meats and seafood. Everything is relatively reasonably priced to make meals. There are also a couple of restaurants if you don’t feel like cooking. - For a small fee Carlos can provide transport to or from the train or bus station.
